Production waste management systems in the converting sector

By Sorgato, 07/03/2024

Sorgato designs and manufactures machinery and systems for the management of production waste in the converting sector. This choice stems from the needs of the market: the companies in the sector that turn to us, in fact, often ask us to supply both dedusting systems and plants to manage industrial waste.

In this article, we will present the scenario related to waste management in our field of activity. We will then focus on the technical aspects and advantages of the solutions proposed by Sorgato.

The management of production waste in the converting sector and Sorgato solutions

The market for the management, transport and disposal of production waste is very competitive: companies are called upon to respond to challenges related to the correct treatment of waste, in compliance with environmental and safety regulations. In addition, they must take into account the quality of the result and the economic sustainability of the process, as waste management can directly affect operating costs.

For the tissue & converting sector, however, this process goes hand in hand with the extraction of dust generated by processing. So, as we have anticipated, several companies turn to Sorgato requesting to supply both the dust extraction systems and the industrial waste management system.

Such a request depends on several criteria:

  • Efficiency. The dedusting plants and the machinery that deal with the processing residues both come from our company. As a result, they are better integrated and meet the standards of precision and efficiency that we guarantee in our work.
  • Cost-effectiveness. The industrial waste management systems we supply are made “turnkey”: the customer does not need further investments for the installation and start-up of the plant.
  • Scalability. Waste management plants can serve three or four production lines at the same time, with consequent benefits in terms of scalability of operations and related costs.
  • Reduced operations. Our production waste management systems can be designed according to highly automated logics, reducing or eliminating the need to foresee subsequent operations.

Let us focus on this last point. The industrial waste management systems that Sorgato offers are customizable: in fact, they have a very wide variety of possible configurations based on the customer’s needs.

Customization can concern, for example, the type of machinery that makes up the waste transport system and the automation in handling. As far as this aspect is concerned, if the customer needs a highly automated solution, Sorgato can offer machines capable of independently managing all phases, from collection to transport. The final output is bales of compressed paper that do not require additional residue management.

In other cases, automation is less pronounced: the waste is collected manually and conveyed to a machine that centrally manages the waste from several converting lines.

Automated waste management of rolled up products

In the converting sector, the management of production waste related to rolled products is of specific importance. Let’s take a closer look at what it is.

A converting line has mainly three points for generating and ejecting the waste deriving from the rolled paper:

  • The unused part of the reels: these are residues that remain attached to the spindle in the reels that are not completely unwound. These residues are not used in production processes.
  • The two side ends of the paper log, cut by the log-saws.
  • Any defective sections of the paper veil, which have holes or tears.

With regard to the latter aspect, during the quality control phase, the web passes through sensors that identify breaks or tears. In this case, the veil is still processed, which is then identified as “defective” and shredded:

  • if the customer requires a higher degree of automation, the shredder can be a self-loading shredder, an exclusive solution produced by Sorgato.
  • If the company prefers to use manual loading shredders, produced by third parties, our company can still insert them into the turnkey plant.

In the same way, within the waste management systems we can include both the industrial rotary separators produced by Sorgato and the static separators made by other companies. The logic we apply is always the same: to provide a turnkey system that fully meets the customer’s needs.
