Bag filter: how it works and advantages

By Sorgato, 13/12/2023

The bag filter is a fundamental component in dust extraction systems: it is in fact a device that serves to eliminate dust from a gaseous flow. In our case, we are obviously talking about an air flow to be dedusted as part of the processes in the converting sector.

In this article, we will delve into how the bag filter works, the benefits of using it, and the features and advantages of Sorgato bag filters.

The bag filter and how it works

The bag filter, therefore, serves to eliminate dust from a flow of air that passes through it. In dust extraction systems, this function is essential for the good result of dedusting operations.

The name “bag filter” derives from the presence of cylindrical bags, called “sleeves”, usually made of synthetic fibers or specialized fabrics. Their arrangement within the filter is carefully designed to maximize the efficiency of particle capture.

The operation of the bag filter can be described in stages, as follows:

  1. Particle capture. The process begins with the suction of air containing dust and particles. The air passes through the filter bags, which are, as we have seen, made of high-performance materials that trap suspended particles.
  2. Mechanical filtering. Larger particles are directly impacted on the sleeves, reducing their speed and causing them to fall due to the force of gravity. The filter bags, thanks to their porous structure, then capture the smallest particles through processes such as interception and direct impact.
  3. Cleaning the sleeves. Over time, the sleeves accumulate dust. Periodic cleaning is essential to maintain consistent efficiency. For cleaning, Sorgato bag filters use automatic cleaning systems with compressed air pulses or blowing fans. These systems reverse the airflow, eliminating captured particles and restoring the device’s filtering capacity.
  4. Dust collection. The removed particles are directed to a specially designed collection chamber. This space allows residual dust to be easily collected, keeping the bag filter efficient in the long run. The dust collected in this way can then be disposed of by means of special bags or big-boxes, or transported pneumatically to a subsequent compaction phase by means of an additional filter (bag or cyclonic) and a briquetting machine.

The use of bag filters has several advantages, related to process accuracy, operating efficiency, reduced costs. We will present them in the next paragraph, along with the specific features of Sorgato bag filters.

Advantages of Sorgato bag filters

Bag filters offer a number of benefits that make them a popular choice for companies in the converting industry. These devices, in fact, allow you to achieve excellent results, while ensuring efficient management of costs and filtering functionality.

Here, in summary, are the main advantages deriving from their use.

  • Efficiency. Thanks to the shape of the bags and the way the device operates, bag filters allow you to keep your work environment clean and free of contaminants efficiently.
  • Application versatility. The structure of the filter bags is modular and adaptable. As a result, the sizing and shape of the filter can be adapted to the production layout and the characteristics of the line, offering an extremely versatile solution.
  • Easy maintenance. Automated cleaning systems make filter maintenance easy, reducing the time and costs involved.
  • Energy saving. Reduced resistance to the flow of air passing through the sleeves requires less energy for the overall operation of the system.
  • Reduced water management costs. Bag filters only require connection to the hydraulic circuit for the fire extinguishing system they are equipped with. Not only does this contribute to a more sustainable management of water resources, but it also results in reduced operating costs for the company.

In addition to the features listed, Sorgato bag filters have specific elements designed specifically for companies in the converting sector.

Firstly, our devices comply with safety regulations, including the requirements of the ATEX directive  against the risks of explosion and fire. This applies to all the countries in which we operate, not just Italy. Elements such as the shape of the handrail or the height of the sill of the filtering devices, just to name a few, vary from country to country: the Sorgato team knows the regulations of the areas in which it operates and, consequently, is able to provide filters that are perfectly compliant.

Our filters are also designed and adapted  for the tissue sector: for this reason they offer excellent performance for the removal of paper dust. The sizing parameters of the bag filters we design and manufacture, in fact, also depend on the type of filtered material, with the same amount of air. In other words, the dimensions and structure of Sorgato bag filters are specifically designed to offer the best result in the sector in which our customers operate.

There are other specific technical requirements for the tissue and converting sector that our filter systems meet: contact our technicians and discover all the solutions we can offer to your company.
