The papertrap: what it is, what it is for, Sorgato solutions

By Sorgato, 29/12/2023

In the tissue & converting industry, the processing of paper veil is a crucial process that engages production lines continuously. The management of leaflets, as a waste product of this phase, is a major challenge for companies in the sector.

In this article we will talk about the papertrap, a device that allows you to conduct the process effectively and automatically, describing its characteristics and functions. In particular, we will focus on the solutions that Sorgato proposes, presenting the characteristics and advantages of the papertraps we design and manufacture.

The papertrap in the converting sector: what it is

For companies that process paper or, more generally, that operate in the tissue sector, the management of leaflets is a delicate aspect.

To understand what it is, let’s first see what leaflets are, which we have already mentioned several times. The term refers to fragments of varying sizes produced during the processing of the paper veil. These fragments result from the tearing of the veil itself and vary greatly in size.

When it comes to converting, i.e. the process of transforming raw materials (such as paper veil) into finished products, leaflets are unwanted waste by-products. The shreds of veil, in fact, can create problems within the work environment in terms of:

  • air healthiness and operator health;
  • safety in manufacturing processes;
  • overall efficiency of industrial plants;
  • quality of the finished product.

The papertrap is a device inserted in dust extraction systems that automatically intercepts and manages the leaflets. Its activity prevents paper fragments from reaching the main filter, acting as a kind of pre-filter, but not only. In fact:

  • the automated operation of the papertrap avoids the need for operators to deal with the manual collection of leaflets;
  • reducing paper build-up contributes to the prevention of potential fire hazards;
  • the only operation required is the periodic emptying of the collection bin.

In the next paragraph we will focus on the characteristics of the papertraps designed and manufactured by Sorgato for its dedusting plants in the converting sector and we will better see what are the advantages of this device.

The papertraps proposed by Sorgato: features and advantages

The papertrap works in conjunction with a second element, the so-called bypass. The unit consisting of papertrap and bypass is installed between the production line that generates the waste and the filter of the dust extraction system. Added to this is an automatic damper that allows the waste to be unloaded into the collection container.

Through its action, the unit separates the dusty air that will subsequently reach the filter to be purified of larger residues. This is especially useful if there are bag filters or drum filters.

The operation of Sorgato papertrap + bypass systems can be described as follows:

  • the air flow to be purified, coming from the line, first passes through the papertrap and then through the bypass. At this stage, the discharge damper remains closed;
  • when the self-cleaning cycle kicks in, the bypass changes the direction of the suction, diverting it to the external environment and excluding the papertrap from the flow;
  • at the same time, the discharge damper opens, allowing the waste to fall towards the container where the leaves are collected.

The installation of the papertrap and bypass unit in dust extraction systems has shown considerable advantages. First of all, the manual cleaning time of the line is reduced, decreasing the related costs and increasing the efficiency of the plants. In addition, as we have seen, the reduction of paper accumulations inside the line makes the working environment safer, also with reference to fire regulations.

Companies are aware of these benefits: this is confirmed by the fact that Sorgato has installed several dozen paper trap groups in Europe and in the American continent in the last ten years.

The paper trap + bypass unit is particularly requested and appreciated by companies that require high quality standards for extraction systems. The improvement that can be achieved concerns both the cleanliness of the work environment and the quality of the finished product.

As with all the plants and machinery that we design and build, therefore, also in this case our technicians move considering different elements. These include the quality of the result, the optimal working conditions for the operators, the organizational and cost efficiency.
